Ways to Saint James reach the City of Culture
The City of Culture is one of the new architectural landmarks de Compostela. Projected late last century by the American architect Peter Einsenmann, the pierced hill east of Santiago leaves no one indifferent: the vast expanse of 686,000 square meters of land (784 times a football field), 175,000 square meters and 52,000 urbanized square meters of construction make it an iconic point of the small town; expertise in construction that led to a chapter in the "megaconstructions" program and various specialized media mentions both books as "political" architecture, Architecture and power, how the rich and powerful shape our world, Deyan Sudjic, and pages and pages in local and state press has led to tremendous budget building.
The container culture developed in 1999 is a metaphor for the ancient city of Santiago. The arrangement in the plane is equally buildings are positioned parallel to the cathedral and its design is based on the plot of santiagués helmet and drawing of a scallop shell, symbol of the city. The streets that divide the space are inspired rueiros center and arcades.
The measurement of height and orientation is, like everything else in the city, the cathedral. The temple is the skyline of the city and no further construction may exceed it in height. This planning is now a curious consequence: an aesthetic look highly valued by Japanese visitors Compostela is that buildings retain a human and graspable dimension: people are still the measure of all things in the Galician capital.
Outside the complex, as a decorative element itself, we find the Hedjuk towers representing forefront of building a complex element that takes as inspiration the own organic architecture of a medieval city. Parallel and winding under one roof plane buildings allude to the rugged topography of the region while Hedjuk tower is a "monument-within-a-monument" erected to honor John Hejduk (New York, 1929-2000), Eisenman who met over fifty years ago. Both belonged to the neo-rationalist group "The New York Five." These towers were designed by Hedjuk in 1992 to decorate the compostelano Belvis Park, but died before he could lay the foundation stone of the project and now accompany the great project of Eisenman.
The fixed content of the Cidade da Cultura never materialized: an opera would be the size of the Lincoln Center in Washington DC, after several museums dedicated to the rich history of Galicia, theaters ... Right now, Cidade is a cultural container where visitors can learn about the latest artistic and intellectual manifestations of the city; is a luxury auditorium with a stage that has seen great musicians of the last century as Björk in past or Chick Corea in recent days dates; also hosts the file Galicia there is a very interesting exhibition curious documents on aspects of institutional and everyday life of the city in the past and activities for all ages are held.
It is also popular among compostelanos advantage sunny afternoons to see the "SERANS" (last moments of the sunset in Galician) and enjoy this magnificent architectural complex. We recommend completing visits to the center, forming a climb to the City of Culture to appreciate the architectural dialogue and subtle and overwhelming at once stylistic harmony.
